Barclays plc is a British universal bank headquartered in London. It is one of the largest financial institutions in the United Kingdom and one of the principal global investment banks, providing retail, corporate, wealth, private, and investment banking services to individual, business, and institutional customers in approximately forty countries. The Barclays group traces its origins to a goldsmith banker in Lombard Street, London, in 1690, and has grown over more than three centuries through repeated mergers and acquisitions, including the formation of Barclay & Company in 1896 from twenty private banks and the integration of Martins Bank in 1969. The company has invested heavily in cloud, data, and digital banking platforms and is publicly listed on the London and New York stock exchanges under the ticker BARC and BCS respectively.
