The company traces its origins to the Overseas Communications Service of the Government of India, which became Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited in 1986. The Tata Group acquired a controlling stake in Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited in 2002, and the company was renamed Tata Communications Limited in 2008. Tata Communications acquired Teleglobe in 2005 and Neotel in South Africa in 2008 to expand its international footprint, and over the following years assembled a global enterprise services portfolio.
