Wipro was founded in 1945 by Mohamed Premji as Western India Vegetable Products Limited, originally a manufacturer of cooking oils and consumer goods. After Mohamed Premji's death in 1966, his son Azim Premji took over leadership and progressively diversified the company into computing hardware, software services, and IT consulting, culminating in the firm's renaming to Wipro Limited in 1982. The Premji family remains a significant shareholder, and Azim Premji continues to serve as founder chairman; Rishad Premji is executive chairman, and Srinivas Pallia is chief executive officer. Wipro's service offerings span application services, cloud, data and analytics, digital engineering, cybersecurity, infrastructure services, and consulting through Wipro Consulting (including the Capco financial-services consulting brand acquired in 2021 and Designit).
