Engineering Manager - Next.js

About the role

Vercel is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Next.js team. In this hands‑on player‑coach position you will write production code, guide architectural decisions, and mentor a small senior engineering group while shaping the future of the open‑source framework that powers millions of web applications.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and ship core Next.js features, reviewing pull requests and debugging complex production issues.
• Own end‑to‑end technical initiatives, from exploration through rollout and ongoing maintenance.
• Set technical direction across rendering, caching, routing, build systems and developer tooling.
• Investigate performance regressions and production failures, turning insights into framework improvements.
• Raise engineering standards by establishing patterns for code quality, testing, reliability and observability.
• Coach engineers through pairing, design reviews and constructive feedback.
• Provide clear people leadership, set expectations, give candid feedback and support career growth.
• Streamline team execution with lightweight planning and decision‑making practices.
• Collaborate with product, design, infrastructure and developer experience teams across Vercel.
• Engage with the open‑source community, balancing contributor input with product priorities.

Eligibility

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with a strong track record of shipping production code.
• Proven experience leading engineers or small technical teams in a hands‑on capacity.
• Deep expertise in React, Next.js, TypeScript and large‑scale framework architecture.
• Ability to make sound architectural decisions and guide teams through complex technical problems.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and a collaborative mindset.
• Experience building developer‑focused products or infrastructure is strongly preferred.
