Staff Frontend Engineer

About the role

GitLab is looking for a Staff Frontend Engineer to lead the design, architecture, and delivery of large‑scale frontend initiatives across its global DevSecOps platform. The role involves shaping standards, modernising legacy code, and guiding AI‑enhanced workflows while collaborating with product, design, and engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical design and delivery of complex, cross‑team frontend projects.
• Define and evolve the frontend platform, design system, and shared architecture for scalability.
• Set standards for versioning, testing, accessibility, security, performance, and maintainability.
• Modernise monolithic or legacy frontends into modular, reusable components.
• Establish contracts and robust release practices for safe deployments.
• Mentor engineers and create guardrails for AI‑assisted development workflows.

Eligibility

• Proven technical leadership across multiple teams or a broad product area.
• Deep experience with frontend architecture in complex web applications.
• Track record of scaling or governing design systems and shared component libraries.
• Hands‑on experience with modular frontend patterns such as web components or runtime composition.
• Ability to influence without formal authority through clear proposals and decision records.
• Experience mentoring engineers and shaping standards, especially for AI‑augmented workflows.
