The company was founded in 1891 by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik in Eindhoven, originally as a manufacturer of incandescent light bulbs. Over the twentieth century Philips expanded into consumer electronics, lighting, healthcare, and semiconductors. Following multiple divestitures — including the spin-off of Signify (formerly Philips Lighting), the divestment of its consumer-electronics and TV businesses, and the sale of NXP Semiconductors and Philips Domestic Appliances — Philips has refocused as a pure-play health-technology company.
