The company operates one of India's largest Unified Payments Interface (UPI) applications, alongside merchant payment-gateway services, insurance and lending distribution, mutual-fund and gold investment products, an Indus Appstore application marketplace, and other consumer-finance and merchant products primarily for the Indian market.
PhonePe was founded in December 2015 by Sameer Nigam, Rahul Chari, and Burzin Engineer, and was acquired by Flipkart in 2016 shortly after launch. After Walmart's 2018 acquisition of Flipkart, PhonePe operated as a Flipkart-group company before being separated and redomiciled to India in late 2022 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Walmart, becoming one of the most highly valued financial-technology companies in India. PhonePe processes a substantial share of all UPI transactions in India alongside its competitors Google Pay and Paytm.
