The company became a separate publicly traded entity on January 4, 2011, following the split of the original Motorola, Inc. into Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility; the heritage of Motorola itself extends back to the founding of Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in 1928.

Motorola Solutions builds technology that helps people be safer in the moments that matter, focusing on mission-critical communications, video security and access control, and command-centre software. Its product portfolio includes APX and MOTOTRBO land-mobile-radio devices and networks, the WAVE PTX broadband push-to-talk service, Avigilon and Pelco video-security and access-control products, the CommandCentral software suite, and a portfolio of services for public-safety agencies and enterprises. The company is publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker MSI.
