The company was founded in 1938 by Stanley Kaplan in Brooklyn, New York, originally as a tutoring service that helped students prepare for the New York State Regents Examinations and, later, the SAT. Kaplan grew over the following decades into one of the largest test-prep brands in the world, expanding into preparation courses for entrance examinations such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, MCAT, LSAT, NCLEX, and various professional licensure exams in fields including accountancy, finance, insurance, real estate, and medicine.
