The company develops products and services for IT service management, IT operations management, automation, observability, mainframe operations, security operations, and AI-driven service management used by large enterprises, banks, telecommunications operators, and government agencies to run their complex IT estates and digital businesses.
The firm was founded in September 1980 by Scott Boulette, John Moores, and Dan Cloer in Houston. Its early products focused on mainframe utilities, performance, and database administration. BMC went public on the Nasdaq stock exchange in 1988, before being acquired and taken private by a consortium led by Bain Capital and Golden Gate Capital in 2013, and was acquired again by KKR in 2018.
