Software Engineer, ChatGPT Shopping

About the role

OpenAI is looking for a senior full‑stack engineer to create next‑generation conversational commerce experiences inside ChatGPT. The role blends frontend, backend and AI‑driven workflows to deliver polished, multimodal shopping features used by millions worldwide.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement end‑to‑end product experiences spanning web services, APIs and modern frontend applications.
• Collaborate with product, design and research teams to prototype and launch AI‑native features quickly.
• Build intuitive, high‑performance interfaces that simplify advanced AI capabilities for users.
• Develop scalable backend systems that enable personalized, real‑time shopping experiences.
• Integrate multimodal inputs such as text, images and interactive UI components.
• Iterate rapidly using user feedback, experiments and product metrics.
• Define engineering standards, architecture and technical direction for the product area.

Eligibility

• Minimum 4 years of experience building consumer‑facing products end to end.
• Strong ability to move across frontend, backend, infrastructure and product architecture.
• Passion for craft, user experience and high‑quality product delivery.
• Comfort with ambiguity and ability to take ideas from concept to production.
• Excellent communication across engineering, design, product and research teams.

Skills

• React, TypeScript, Next.js, JavaScript for frontend development.
• Python, Go, Node.js or Rust for backend services.
• Experience with distributed systems, APIs and cloud infrastructure.
• Familiarity with multimodal AI capabilities and consumer product design.
