Research Intern – AI/ML

About the role

IBM Research India is offering a summer research internship for students passionate about artificial intelligence. The three‑month program runs between May and August 2027 at the Gurgaon and Bangalore labs, where interns will dive deep into cutting‑edge AI topics such as large language models, generative AI, AI agents and accelerator software.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with mentors on active AI research projects and contribute code or experiments.
• Read, analyse and reproduce results from recent research papers.
• Design and run controlled experiments to validate hypotheses.
• Develop prototypes using Python and PyTorch for tasks like model training, fine‑tuning or inference.
• Explore and experiment with AI accelerator stacks and related tooling.
• Document findings, prepare technical reports and present outcomes to the research team.
• Assist in building and testing AI agents, including tool‑use and reasoning workflows.
• Participate in code reviews, version‑control practices and use of development environments such as VS Code and Jupyter.
• Stay updated with the latest trends in LLMs, reinforcement learning and generative AI.
• Identify potential future research directions based on experimental results.

Eligibility

• Currently enrolled in B.E/B.Tech, M.E/M.Tech (including dual‑degree programs) or PhD programmes.
• Minimum academic performance of 70% or 7.0 CGPA in the ongoing degree.
• Zero professional experience required – the role is open to fresh graduates and final‑year students.

Skills

• Strong Python programming fundamentals.
• Solid understanding of machine‑learning concepts and deep‑learning architectures.
• Hands‑on experience with PyTorch.
• Familiarity with large language models, transformers, generative AI and natural‑language processing.
• Experience using VS Code, Jupyter notebooks and Git for version control.
• Exposure to AI agents, tool‑calling and reasoning models.
• Ability to read and critically evaluate research papers.
• Competence in designing controlled experiments and reproducing results.
