Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corporation, commonly known as Wabtec, is an American multinational rail-equipment and technology company headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company designs, builds, services, and modernises freight and transit locomotives, rail components and braking systems, signalling and train-control products, and digital rail-operations software, and also serves the mining, marine, and industrial markets with engines and related products.
The present company was formed in 1999 through the merger of Westinghouse Air Brake Company (WABCO) and MotivePower Industries Corporation. WABCO itself was founded by inventor George Westinghouse in 1869 in Pittsburgh and is widely credited with developing the railway air-brake system. In February 2019, Wabtec completed the acquisition of GE Transportation, the rail-business unit of General Electric, dramatically expanding its locomotive and digital portfolio. The company is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker WAB.
