The company develops and sells a collaborative work-management platform that combines a spreadsheet-style interface with project management, automation, dashboarding, content collaboration, resource management, and portfolio-level reporting features, used by enterprises and teams to plan, execute, and report on cross-functional work. The firm was founded in 2005 by Brent Frei and Mark Mader, and went public on the New York Stock Exchange in April 2018 under the ticker SMAR. In September 2024, Smartsheet announced an agreement to be acquired and taken private by Vista Equity Partners and Blackstone in a transaction that closed in early 2025; the company has continued to operate under the Smartsheet brand. Mark Mader serves as the company's chief executive officer. The Smartsheet platform is used by tens of thousands of organisations worldwide, including a large share of the Fortune 500. Customers use Smartsheet for project and program management, IT and operations workflows, marketing campaign management, construction-project tracking, sales operations, HR and people processes, and data-aggregation use cases that historically lived in shared spreadsheets.
