Its principal subsidiaries include National Westminster Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland, Ulster Bank, and Coutts.
The company traces its origins to The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc, which was renamed NatWest Group plc in 2020 to reflect that the majority of its customers banked with the National Westminster Bank brand. National Westminster Bank itself was formed in 1968 by the merger of National Provincial Bank and Westminster Bank, and the group was substantially restructured in the years following the 2008 global financial crisis, during which it was significantly recapitalised by the British government.
