Nasdaq, Inc. is an American multinational financial services company headquartered in New York City. The company owns and operates the Nasdaq Stock Market — one of the largest stock exchanges in the world by market capitalization of listed companies — and provides trading, clearing, exchange technology, regulatory, securities-listing, information, and public-company services to capital markets and other regulated industries worldwide. The Nasdaq Stock Market launched in February 1971 as the first electronic stock exchange. It was originally operated as a subsidiary of the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), and Nasdaq was later spun off as an independent publicly traded company in 2002. The company is itself listed on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol NDAQ. In addition to operating its US equities, options, and fixed-income markets, Nasdaq licenses its market technology to more than ninety marketplaces, regulators, central securities depositories, and clearing houses in over fifty countries.
