McAfee, LLC is an American consumer-cybersecurity software company headquartered in San Jose, California. The firm builds online-protection products including antivirus and anti-malware, identity-theft protection, virtual private networks, secure web browsing, password management, scam detection, and parental controls, sold directly to consumers and small businesses and bundled with personal computers and other devices through original-equipment manufacturer partnerships. The company was founded in 1987 by John McAfee in Santa Clara, California, originally as McAfee Associates, Inc. McAfee was renamed Network Associates, Inc. from 1997 to 2004 following its merger with Network General, then re-adopted the McAfee name. In August 2010 Intel Corporation acquired McAfee for approximately $7.7 billion and in 2014 rebranded the business as Intel Security Group. In 2017 Intel sold a majority stake in the business to TPG Capital and Thoma Bravo, restoring the McAfee name as an independent company. McAfee subsequently went public in October 2020 and was taken private again in March 2022 by an investor group led by Advent International and Permira. McAfee's product family is now focused on consumer protection, including McAfee+ Family, Premium, and Advanced plans, McAfee Total Protection, McAfee LiveSafe, and McAfee Mobile Security. The company's enterprise security business was divested in 2021 and is now operated as Trellix. McAfee employs more than 2,000 people globally. India operations include a major engineering and operations centre in Bengaluru that supports product engineering, threat research, and global services for McAfee's consumer products.
