The company was founded in 2004 by Scott McFarlane, Rory Rawlings, and Jared Vogt and was originally based on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Avalara conducted its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in June 2018 under the ticker AVLR. In October 2022 the company was taken private through an acquisition led by Vista Equity Partners valued at approximately 8.4 billion United States dollars.
