The company was founded in 1985 by James R. Scapa, George Christ, and Mark Kistner, and was publicly listed on Nasdaq under the ticker ALTR. In 2024 Siemens AG announced an agreement to acquire Altair, with the transaction subsequently completed and Altair becoming part of Siemens Digital Industries Software.
