Akamai

Akamai Technologies, Inc. is an American content-delivery, cybersecurity, and cloud-computing company headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that operates one of the world's largest distributed edge platforms. The company was founded in 1998 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Tom Leighton and graduate student Daniel Lewin, building on academic research into algorithms for routing internet traffic efficiently across geographically distributed servers.

Akamai's core business is the Akamai Intelligent Edge Platform, a global network of hundreds of thousands of servers deployed in thousands of locations across more than a hundred countries. This platform underpins the company's three principal product lines: Content Delivery, which accelerates websites, video streaming, software downloads, and APIs for enterprises; Security, which provides web-application and API protection, distributed-denial-of-service mitigation, bot management, zero-trust access, and identity protection; and Compute, a cloud-computing offering that includes Akamai Cloud (incorporating Linode following the 2022 acquisition) and a growing edge-compute portfolio.
