About the role

As a Software Development Engineer 1 at Umanist NA, you will join the backend team building high‑availability microservices that power core e‑commerce functions. The role focuses on Java‑based services, API design, and ensuring system reliability through monitoring and CI/CD pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Create and upkeep scalable Java‑based microservices and RESTful APIs leveraging Spring Boot and associated technologies.
• Help construct high‑availability, fault‑tolerant systems that underpin essential e‑commerce operations.
• Improve observability and debugging by integrating monitoring, logging, and tracing tools like Grafana, Loki and Pinpoint.
• Write and run unit, integration and performance tests to guarantee code reliability before production.
• Produce clean, modular, maintainable code following industry best practices.
• Continuously tune backend applications for better performance, scalability and uptime.
• Engage in code reviews, design discussions and architectural planning.
• Monitor production environments, troubleshoot critical incidents and proactively enhance system health.
• Work closely with DevOps teams to enable smooth deployments and CI/CD automation.

Eligibility

• 1.5–2 years of practical backend development experience with Java (versions 8, 11 or 17).
• Strong grasp of object‑oriented programming, data structures and algorithms.
• Proficiency in Spring Boot, building RESTful APIs and using JPA/Hibernate.
• Hands‑on experience with MySQL or other relational databases; familiarity with NoSQL databases is advantageous.
• Understanding of multithreading, concurrency and asynchronous processing.
• Experience using monitoring and tracing tools like Grafana, Loki, Prometheus or Pinpoint.
• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes and microservices architecture.
• Knowledge of messaging platforms such as Kafka, RabbitMQ or ActiveMQ.
• Proficiency in Git, Maven/Gradle and CI/CD pipelines.
• Strong debugging, problem‑solving and performance optimization abilities.
• Effective communication skills and a collaborative, ownership‑driven attitude.
